In 17 years of practicing public relations full time, Dave Thompson, APR has worked as the director of corporate communications for a high-tech firm, acted as media consultant and coach, and helped start-ups write Web content. Today Dave is the Public Affairs Program Manager for the Oregon Department of Transportation, where he leads the agency’s spokespersons. Winter storms, road-closing crashes, landslides and mudflows have honed his crisis management skills…and led directly to today’s talk!
Dave has taught FEMA’s G-290 basic PIO class to Oregon communicators for the past seven years, and has taught media training all over the country for decades. He spent 20 years in broadcast news, working as science reporter, business reporter, producer and anchor in five different TV markets. His reporting took him to Bosnia during the war and to Romania after the overthrow of Ceauşescu. His stories appeared on all the national morning and evening news shows and national cable news channels.
Dave earned a degree in math from the University of Colorado and a Master’s in computer science from the University of Toronto. He spent several years working as a research scientist before becoming a reporter. Dave earned his APR in 2009 and has helped teach the APR course in Portland and Salem for the past seven years.
